{"id":265,"date":"2013-10-15T09:16:29","date_gmt":"2013-10-15T14:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mesotheliomabook.com\/blog\/?p=265"},"modified":"2014-10-29T12:20:19","modified_gmt":"2014-10-29T17:20:19","slug":"government-shutdown-halts-clinical-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomabook.com\/blog\/government-shutdown-halts-clinical-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Shutdown Halts Clinical Trial Enrollment for Cancer Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"3\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-266\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mesotheliomabook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iStock_000011082719Small.jpg\" alt=\"iStock_000011082719Small\" width=\"341\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomabook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iStock_000011082719Small.jpg 849w, https:\/\/www.mesotheliomabook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iStock_000011082719Small-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>While hopes for a quick end to the government shutdown seem to be fading, history tells us that it <i>will <\/i>end\u2014eventually.\u00a0 In the meantime, what could become the second longest government shutdown in U.S. history (if it continues past 18 days), has halted many services and programs that help protect America\u2019s health, safety, and security.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. government\u2019s official web portal (USA.gov):<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Research into life-threatening diseases and other areas will stop, and new patients won\u2019t be accepted into clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Work to protect consumers, ranging from child product safety to financial security to the safety of hazardous waste facilities, will cease.\u00a0 The EPA will halt non-essential inspections of chemical facilities and drinking water systems.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Hundreds of thousands of Federal employees including many charged with protecting us from terrorist threats, defending our borders, inspecting our food, and keeping our skies safe will work without pay until the shutdown\u00a0 ends.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Vital services that ensure seniors and young children have access to healthy food and meals may not have sufficient Federal funds to serve all beneficiaries in an extended lapse.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While halting any of these services places American citizens at risk, those citizens awaiting approval to enroll in life-saving clinical trials are especially at risk.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Institutes of Health, \u201cthe NIH Clinical Center is open and continues to function during the partial government shutdown.\u201d \u00a0In addition, \u201cpatients <b>currently enrolled in a protocol<\/b> at the Clinical Center are able to continue their participation.\u201d \u00a0However, \u201cthe Clinical Center is not able to admit NEW patients &#8212; unless deemed medically necessary by the Clinical Center Director &#8212; if they are not already enrolled in a protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>The NIH advises potential participants to consult with their research team.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, each week, the NIH Clinical Center will have to turn away an estimated 200 patients hoping to enroll in clinical trials there.\u00a0 Many of these potential participants are cancer patients and an estimated 30 are children. \u00a0According to NIH spokesman John T. Burklow, of the 30 children turned away, 10 are children with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Although hundreds of medical centers across the country conduct clinical trials, the NIH Clinical Center is the world\u2019s largest hospital devoted exclusively to clinical investigation. \u00a0The Center has welcomed more than 475,000 participants since it opened its doors in 1953, and the hospital sees roughly 10,000 new research participants each year. \u00a0On the first day of the government shutdown, a staggering 1,500 clinical research studies were in progress at the Center.<\/p>\n<p>A hefty one-half of the research studies at the Center are of the natural history of disease, especially rare diseases, which often are not studied anywhere else, says the NIH.\u00a0 Mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive form of cancer, is a member of this group.<\/p>\n<p>The Center\u2019s critical research studies and life-saving clinical trials (often the first tests of new drugs and therapies in people) go hand in hand. \u00a0According to the NIH, \u201cthe clinical trials at the NIH Clinical Center are predominantly Phase I and Phase II, often first-in-human to test safety and efficacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Simply put, the NIH needs human participants in order to continue to make advances in the treatment and possible eradication of all types of cancer.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the government shutdown, cancer care, including mesothelioma cancer care, continues at the NIH. Clinical trials are still being conducted as well with participants who were enrolled<b> before<\/b> the shutdown.
