Dr. Gharagozloo is a thoracic surgeon who heads the University of Arizona Health Network Thoractic Oncology Program.  Because mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive of all cancers, Dr. Gharagozloo performs a very progressive surgery – an extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Dr. Gharagozloo uses a robotic-assisted procedure that reduces blood loss, shortens the patient’s hospital stay and lowers risk of infection and death, according to the University of Arizona.  The surgery removes the lining of the chest cavity, a procedure that normally causes a loss of up to two-fifths of the total blood supply.  This new surgical technique, that reduces the amount of blood loss, is important.  Without the robotic assistant, the surgery is a ‘very blind operation’ describes Dr. Gharagozloo.

“It’s dramatic when you see the patient the next day,” Dr. Gharagozloo says. “It’s the difference between a patient on a ventilator and a patient who is sitting there reading a newspaper.”

Dr. Gharagozloo said robotic-assisted surgery is safer operation.

“The impact we are hoping to make is through early detection as well as very advanced minimally-invasive therapy for these tumors,” the thoracic surgeon said.

Dr. Gharagozloo has performed six of these ground-breaking surgeries and is the only surgeon known to  offer this option to those battling malignant pleural mesothelioma.
