TV Ad Compares Alcohol to Asbestos as Increasing the Risk of Cancer

St. Louis, MO (January 2014) -- A graphic TV ad depicting one of the deadliest consequences of consuming too much alcohol has also thrust the dangers of asbestos exposure back into the spotlight. The controversial ad, released during Alcohol Awareness Week in November 2013 on their website Alcohol Policy, shows a tumor slowly growing in the bottom of a beer glass in unison every drink the consumer takes. The World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency and the International Agency for Research on Cancer all classify alcohol, tobacco and asbestos as Group 1 Carcinogens. Like alcohol and tobacco, asbestos increases the risk of specific types of cancer.

“This is a powerful advertisement that shows the dangers of asbestos exposure by positioning it with alcohol and tobacco which are proven to have harmful effects on one’s health” said Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM. “Because the dangers of alcohol and tobacco are more widely known, hopefully this will grab people’s attention to know that asbestos exposure is also dangerous, though the effects may not be seen until years later.”

Alcohol increases the risk of bowel, mouth, pharyngeal (throat), esophageal (food pipe), laryngeal (voice box), breast, and liver cancer. Tobacco is responsible for 87% of lung cancer deaths, and it increases the risk of cancers of the larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, uterus, cervix, colon/rectum, and ovaries (mucinous). Tobacco also increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, lips, nasal cavity (nose) and sinuses, and the risk of acute myeloid leukemia. Unlike alcohol and tobacco, however, asbestos is solely responsible for several types of mesothelioma cancer including pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma, and testicular mesothelioma.
