'Dance Moms' JoJo Siwa's Makeup Kit Recalled After Asbestos Discovered

A makeup kit created by former ‘Dance Moms’ star JoJo Siwa and Claire’s has been recalled by the retail giant after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that it contained asbestos. The FDA has issued a warning to the public to stop using the product immediately.

Asbestos has been found in numerous Claire’s makeup products dating back to 2017, with three products already on the recall list for 2019. JoJo Siwa Makeup Set (Batch/Lot No. S180109) is now a part of this group. The kit contained eyeshadow, two lip-glosses, and nail polish.

In response to the recall on her makeup kit, Siwa released a YouTube video titled “My Makeup.” In the video, the bubbly teenager said:

"Recently, it’s been brought up to my attention that there’s been a problem with one of my products in Claire’s stores, with one of the JoJo makeup products, and I just want to let everyone know that no matter what, safety is myself and Nickelodeon’s number-one priority in everything, in every product, and everything out there.”

Claire’s also released a statement that surprised consumers as it characterized trace amounts of asbestos as “acceptable.” The company said:

Claire’s stands behind the safety of this item and all other Claire’s cosmetic items, as such small trace amounts are considered acceptable under European and Canadian cosmetic safety regulations.”

The company added that it has "voluntarily recalled the JoJo Cosmetic Kit out of an abundance of caution.”

Also testing positive for asbestos was a Beauty Plus product called Global Contour Effects Palette 2/No. S1603002/PD-C1179. It's unclear where this cosmetic was sold.

There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. This means that even “small trace amounts” could lead to mesothelioma decades down the road. If you have been exposed to asbestos, don’t hesitate. See your doctor today.
