MRHFM Supports the Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network in Opposition to Senate Bill 13

WAVNSt. Louis, MO (September 2013) -- As a law firm that exclusively handles mesothelioma cases, MRHFM is backing The Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network and its stance in opposition to Senate Bill 13. The organization is spreading awareness about asbestos exposure, educating people about Senate Bill 13, a bill that would delay justice to the victims.

The Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network (WAVN) explains that the SB 13 was created by lobbyists for the asbestos industry. SB 13 is based on model legislation provided by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a group that generates “model” bills that benefit their corporate members. WAVN states, “SB 13 will delay justice and allow corporations to deny accountability until asbestos victims die, leaving grieving families and taxpayers with the bill.”

This is not the first piece of ALEC legislation that lobbyists have introduced that will have negative effects for those with asbestos related diseases including mesothelioma. In 2007 the ALEC adopted the “Asbestos Claims Transparency Act” which has, in some form, been introduced in seven other states. In March of this year, the Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act was passed in the House Committee and is waiting to be voted on by Congress. MRHFM came out in opposition to the FACT Act as it would slow down the judicial process so that adequate compensation may come too late in future asbestos cases.

“The Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network is an advocate for the veterans who make up 30 percent of all mesothelioma victims, for first responders in disaster zones and for every future asbestos victim that may not even know that they have been exposed,” said Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM. “We work on behalf of mesothelioma victims on a daily basis. When threats such as SB 13 arise, we are thankful to organizations like the Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network for getting the facts out there and educating the public about bad laws like SB 13”

Along with the Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network, MRHFM urges Wisconites to take action and write to the state’s senators to oppose Senate Bill 13. Mesothelioma Awareness Day is September 26 and both the Wisconsin Asbestos Victims Network and MRHFM will be spreading awareness about asbestos exposure, mesothelioma, and the threat that SB 13 poses to Wisconsin.
