Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, located in the north-central part of the state, as well as the county seat of Jefferson County. Several farms towns were merged in 1871 to form present day Birmingham at the crossroads for two rail lines. The raw materials needed to make steel - iron ore, coal and limestone - were all naturally found in the area and Birmingham quickly became an industrial hub of the South. Growth continued in the city as steel and iron production, mining, and the railroad industry continued to grow. The Great Depression hit the city hard as many mills closed their doors, but wartime production during World War II revived the city and a diverse group of manufacturers thrived for decades post-war.
The history of manufacturing, steel production and railroading in Birmingham sadly includes many occupations and jobsites where asbestos products were popularly used, putting workers at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer from asbestos exposure.
