Stockyards were developed and the city’s population continued to grow rapidly as the large livestock market attracted jobs. In 1928 an oil field was discovered beneath the city and oil, natural gas, and petroleum industries became a large part of Oklahoma City’s economy. Wealth came with the oil strike and financial and manufacturing industries grew. During World War II, Oklahoma City was home to many war industries and Tinker Air Force Base was developed, stimulating the economy post war. Today, Oklahoma City continues to be a center for finance, farm trade, livestock and distribution.
